Gorilla Trekking

A permit, a trailhead and one hour with a mountain gorilla family.

Mountain gorillas live in the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in south-west Uganda. Treks start early, after a briefing from UWA rangers, and can last from two to eight hours depending on where the family slept the night before.

You walk with a ranger and trackers, at altitude, on trails that are often muddy. Once the group is found, you spend one hour with the gorillas. Porters can carry your bag and help on the steep sections.

What to bring

  • Boots with grip
  • Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt
  • Rain jacket
  • Gardening gloves for the nettles
  • Water and a packed lunch
  • A camera without a flash

A foreign non-resident gorilla permit is US$800 under the current UWA tariff. We confirm the rate when we book.
