Bird Watching
Grey crowned cranes, shoebills and forest specialists across more than a thousand recorded species.
Uganda has more than 1,000 recorded bird species, a large share of them in the Albertine Rift forests and the wetlands of the west. You do not need to be a specialist to enjoy it. Most safari days already include good birding.
The grey crowned crane is the national bird and turns up on open grassland. Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is the best-known place to look for the shoebill. Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Kazinga Channel and the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary add waterbirds, kingfishers and forest species.
Where to go
- Mabamba Swamp, by canoe, for the shoebill
- Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, next to Kibale National Park
- Kazinga Channel and the plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, for Albertine Rift forest birds
- Murchison Falls National Park and the Nile delta
